6 Natural Tips on Dealing With Migraines according to Ayurveda

Migraines are so much more than just a headache. The throbbing in the temples. The bright light. The loud noises. Many people have problems concentrating and working because of the severe pain. It is equally difficult to rest. Your head is buzzing. Everything hurts. Every sound is too loud. All you want is for the pain to go away.

You can take a painkiller to alleviate the pain. But what if the pills aren’t helping anymore? Or what if you feel that there could be natural solutions to help you out?

The good news is: Most migraine triggers can be cured or at least prevented. If not, you can also try to reduce the triggers. The second good news: All these methods are natural. So you can fight migraines in a safe and healthy way by helping your body.

We'll give you nine tricks that can help you keep migraines out of your life - or at least greatly minimize them, both in terms of intensity and frequency. 


Tip 1: Listen to your body.

Try to figure out what triggers your migraine by tuning into your body’s reactions to certain things: is it a smell, light, a type of food that jumpstarts the migraine headache? Stress can also be a trigger.


Tip 2: Be sure to meditate every day.

Finding some time in your day to meditate will help you keep the stress levels low. In deep relaxation the healing mechanisms of the body are automatically activated. 


Tip 3: Lay off the sweets and junk food.

Have you observed your eating habits recently? Are you a fast food enthusiast or do you put great value on a healthy diet? Migraines can also be affected by food and food habits. Avoid processed food, use fresh ingredients and eat mindfully. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water!


Tip 4: A short walk or yoga can work wonders.

Just a few minutes' walk can make a big difference. Take a short stroll in the morning, breathe in some air. You can also do light, simple yoga postures. Here is a list of a few poses you can do: 

  1. Hastapadasana (Standing Forward Bend)

  2. Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose)

  3. Shishuasana (Child Pose)

  4. Marjariasana (Cat Stretch)

  5. Paschimottanasana (Two-legged Forward Bend)

  6. Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose)

  7. Padmasana (Lotus Pose)

  8. Shavasana (Corpse Pose)


Tip 5: Rest well, sleep well.

Migraines can be triggered by a disturbed sleep pattern or lack of proper sleep. The darker the bedroom, the deeper you can fall asleep. You should aim to sleep for at least seven hours, preferably between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am.


Tip 5: Allow yourself a mental break.

The more you stress, especially at work, the higher the likelihood that the next migraine attack is around the corner.  Treat yourself with a nice massage or detox, spend some quality time with your family or even alone, if that feels better. 


Tip 6: Beat the fear of migraines

Have you ever noticed that only the fear of migraine can trigger another attack? Do you catch yourself unconsciously thinking that doing certain things could be detrimental to your headache? Then worry about it all day, about what you've done, feeling the slight headache coming, that will drag throughout the day. Keep your mind busy with other things and don’t let the fear take over and cause another headache. 

As simple as that. . .
